AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCE W/XAVER HIRSCH

In the stillness of the night, beneath the vast expanse of the cosmos, two beings, separated by time and space, drift into the tranquil embrace of sleep. Here, in the profound quietude of slumber, their minds embark on a journey that transcends the boundaries of their waking world.
In a quiet, dimly lit laboratory, two minds converge on the brink of a scientific frontier, their collective vision bringing to life an extraordinary device—a dream recorder. This ambitious project, inspired by the pioneering research of Yukiyasu Kamitani in 2016, seeks to capture the ephemeral world of dreams, translating the abstract and intangible into something that can be observed, analyzed, and perhaps even understood.
Kamitani's groundbreaking work laid the foundation, revealing the potential to decode visual imagery from the brain's activity using a sophisticated machine-learning algorithm. His research proposed a tantalizing possibility: that the enigmatic and often fleeting images that dance in our minds during sleep could be brought into the light of day. Building upon this vision, our two scientists have dedicated themselves to transforming this theoretical concept into a tangible reality.
In our AV performance “Dreamcapsule”, we translate the signals of brainwaves streaming through EEG connections into uncanny sounds, combined with visual impressions derived from microscopic images and dynamic game-engine worlds - a work at the intersection of natural aesthetics and technological practices. The performance is a process of fluidity that continuously explores and pushes the boundaries of consciousness, perception and signals to create unconventional audiovisual episodes in the realms of dreams. An audiovisual performance as a dialog and exploration of dream translation, telling a story about the development of a “dream recorder” and society's use of this new technology: The resulting dream eggs, ultimately a symbol of society's unquenchable thirst for escapism, have become a curse - a reminder of the dangers of intruding into the most intimate and private realms of the human mind, a testament to the dangers of pushing the limits of technology without understanding the consequences.
