ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Tamara Knapp is a visual artist and visual researcher based in Berlin. Her artistic practice operates at the intersection of nature, technology, the body and the production of visual knowledge. She explores how scientific and technological systems shape our perception of organic forms, materiality and the human body.
Drawing on scientific imagery, historical archives and natural phenomena, Knapp develops multimedia works in which digital imaging techniques intersect with analogue materials, photographic processes, audiovisual media and spatial installations. She is particularly interested in the transitions between organic and synthetic forms, as well as the question of how images generate, store and transform knowledge.
In her long-term artistic research project ‘OVA’, she explores the female body and reproduction as biological, cultural and technological visual spaces. The work combines historical medical depictions and scientific visualisations with contemporary imaging technologies and feminist critique of science.
Knapp’s works often emerge from processes of collecting, archiving, translating and reorganising. She regards artistic practice as a form of research in which scientific, technical, social and embodied knowledge overlap and are translated into new visual forms.
